Last May 26, Orange Magazine PH had the privilege of attending an intimate, exclusive media launch to formally usher in this hidden gem. Tucked away as a neighborhood bar hidden behind Mabuhay Craft Coffee, guests are invited to slip through to the back and ascend to a sanctuary that leaves the bustling city behind for an evening of sensory storytelling.
The Ambiance: A Living Room Built for Stories and Connection
Stepping into Malagihay Cocktail Club feels less like entering a commercial establishment and more like being welcomed into an upscale, deeply personal living room of an old friend. Rather than chasing exclusivity, the establishment prioritizes a welcoming “home” atmosphere where patrons feel they truly belong.
The lighting is remarkably intimate—low, amber, and cast in soft shadows that immediately put the mind at ease. It features a curated, vintage-meets-contemporary aesthetic with comfortable seating that encourages patrons to linger for hours.
As founder Ian Libang described during the event: “As you can see, it’s a living room setup—maybe your Lola’s living room, but your Lola is a little bit lit or cool because of these lights and the sound system… For us, a bar is a place where you can mostly connect… a space where you could come in and feel connected, and you could come in that you could literally feel at home.”

When explaining why the menu is subdivided into Mood, Moment, and Memory, Libang shared: “Because we try to tap in, rather than flavors, to your emotions and the feelings that you have felt all throughout while you guys are drinking the cocktails. It’s something that we can all connect in a way, but it’s also something that probably reminds us of something.”
During the launch, the beverage team showcased how deeply rooted the club is in local culture. By fostering an intimate environment, the establishment focuses heavily on achieving that coveted “malagihay” state—the perfect, harmonious balance between being tipsy and completely chill. Libang joked that their cocktail selection is intentionally crafted to be easy-drinking: “We don’t want you to be too overwhelmed while you’re drinking… you don’t want to be drunk, you want to be just malagihay.”

Libang highlighted the driving purpose behind the bar’s inception: “There’s a lot of bars abroad that’s been managed if not open by Filipino FNB operators, but why can’t we have a concept that’s fully centered around Filipino culture? If we’re known for our hospitality, that’s what Malagihay stands for—a place where everyone could feel welcome… a place you feel welcome even if you come here three times or four times a week.”
