The hospitality landscape in Rizal just got a premier upgrade. At the recent Monaco Hotel Media Conference, key executives and owners gathered to share the heart, history, and vision defining their rising property. Beyond showcasing the Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic and top-tier guest experiences, the evening turned into a deeply inspiring masterclass on perseverance, led by Engr. Reynaldo A. Carpio, Ph. D., President and CEO of Grand Monaco Land, Inc.
Joined by Christian Guballa, Managing Director of Approche Hospitality Management (AHM), Jerome Carpio, Vice President for hotel operations, and singer-entrepreneur Mark Carpio, Executive Vice President of Grand Monaco Estate Developers Inc., the panel pulled back the curtain on how a farm boy from Cagayan turned a relentless work ethic into a real estate and hospitality legacy.
From the Farm to the City: A “Kalabaw” Mentality
Before Engineer Reynaldo Carpio was building world-class hotels, his everyday companion was a water buffalo (kalabaw). Coming from humble beginnings as the son of a farmer and a market vendor in the province, his future initially seemed mapped out for him in the fields.
“In the beginning, I was enjoying it because, as a child, you want to experience things,” Engr. Carpio shared, recalling how his father would intentionally time his summer breaks for plowing and planting season. “But by the third or fourth year, I was starting to notice… I told myself, ‘I want to change the course of my life.‘”
Driven by big dreams, he left for Manila against his father’s wishes—and with zero financial support. His early days in the city were a far cry from luxury; he slept on a mat tucked underneath the stairs of his aunt’s beauty parlor. To survive, he did everything from sweeps and manicures to sewing and trading marketplace scraps for soup bones.
“In my house in Ayala Alabang, I have a life-sized statue of a kalabaw (water buffalo) because it reminds me of my life. It symbolizes my life. When you say kalabaw, that’s a hard worker. Rain or shine, from morning until dark, it keeps working,” he said. “While I was sleeping under those stairs, that’s where the dream started: that one day, I would have at least one decent house that I could proudly say I built. Without realizing it, that small dream of one house has now turned into over 5,000 houses built over time.”
The Birth of the “Monaco” Standard
Carpio’s trajectory shifted when he transitioned from a general contractor to a full-fledged developer. In 1995, while attending an international Rotary convention in Nice, France, he visited the nearby principality of Monaco. The experience forever altered his design philosophy.
“Monaco is a very small country inside France, but it is one of the best and most expensive places. You can see a lot of beautiful designs, architecture, sports cars… a Mercedes-Benz there is just a taxi,” Engr. Carpio recalled with a smile. “I asked my architects to copy those designs and we studied how to fit them to Filipino taste. The design of our projects, including this building, is inspired by the Mediterranean in Monaco.”
For Engr. Carpio, the Monaco name isn’t just about European aesthetics; it is an uncompromising commitment to longevity and world-class execution.
“When you say European, you’re talking about quality. If the work is sloppy, it cannot be compromised—I will really have it torn down. And of course, when you say quality, it is not cheap. In the long term, if you choose quality, you will never go wrong because it is a lifetime investment.”

Elevating the Hospitality Scene
This exact blueprint of strict quality control and structural integrity is what the leadership team is injecting into the hotel operations. To stand out in a competitive market, Monaco Hotel relies on delivering an flawless, end-to-end experience for leisure, business, and milestone events.
“If you really want to sustain the business, you have to keep the quality,” Engr. Carpio emphasized. “Even here in the hospitality business, quality is still the deciding factor to survive: the quality of the food that you serve, the quality of service that guests experience when they come here, and the quality of the shows that we produce.”
With a seasoned team driving daily operational efficiency and strategic positioning, Monaco Hotel stands as a stunning monument to what happens when raw grit meets high standards. It is more than just a place to stay—it is a testament to a lifetime of hard work, proving that placeholders under the stairs can eventually evolve into grand Mediterranean destinations.
Monaco Hotel is managed by Approche Hospilality.
