Fuel vs. electricity: How VinFast cuts daily transport costs by over 60 percent

Let’s be honest: being a car owner or a transport operator in the Philippines lately feels like a constant battle with the fuel pump. With global energy prices pushing gasoline past ₱100 per liter in early 2026, many of us have spent more time watching the meter climb than looking at the road. But while the headlines focus on the “energy emergency,” the partnership between VinFast and the Green SM platform is creating a quiet shift on the streets.

When behind the wheel for a living, every peso counts. A typical fuel-powered vehicle can easily consume ₱5,000 a month just for basic city driving. Compare that to electric models like the VinFast Herio Green and Limo Green, which cover the same distance for a fraction of the cost in electricity.

However, the Philippine market is no longer devoid of electric options. From budget hatchbacks to high-end European imports, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming a common sight. So, why VinFast? For the analytical driver, the answer lies in the ecosystem. While other EV brands often leave owners at the mercy of a fragmented public charging network, where apps, plugs, and pricing vary by mall or parking lot, VinFast has built a dedicated foundation.

The real kicker for those joining the Green SM platform is the exclusive access to V-Green stations with free charging until March 31, 2029. While competitors’ owners are still calculating per-kilowatt-hour costs at third-party stations, drivers of the Herio Green and Limo Green see that their daily expenses effectively drop to zero for the next few years. That’s not just a “green choice”; it’s a massive raise that other brands simply cannot match.

The shift toward practicality with EVs brings significant advantages, especially to those who forget that the cost of a car isn’t just what goes into the tank. Traditional engines are a headache of hundreds of moving parts, oil changes, spark plugs, transmission fluids–-all things that eventually break. Even compared to other EVs, VinFast’s simplified maintenance schedule and the robust build quality of the Herio Green and Limo Green are designed specifically for the rigorous demands of Philippine roads.

Still, the biggest hurdle has always been the “buy-in.” Most EV brands require a massive upfront investment or a stringent bank loan that is out of reach for the average operator. This is where the Green SM rental program changes the game entirely.

With VinFast and the Green SM platform, Filipino drivers are presented with a straightforward, accessible gateway to the EV revolution. When paired with an affordable rental model with years of free charging and minimal maintenance, the financial math becomes undeniable. VinFast and Green SM are offering a lifeline to a transport sector battered by inflation. For the analytical driver, the choice is no longer about predicting the next fuel hike. Rather, it is about securing a predictable, profitable path forward.
