“Before this workshop, no one ever taught me how to navigate the job market or manage one’s career” is a line that Malou del Castillo would often hear from participants of her workshops. So this career coach, psychologist, and speaker decided to write The Career Roadmap: Your Personal Guide to Corporate Career Success.

“I realized there was a gap in information for our Filipino corporate workers. I became aware that most employees, whether fresh graduates or long time workers, feel very nervous, unprepared and unsure of how to discern their job objective, make their resume, prepare for interviews or even manage their careers once hired or working in a corporate job. Despite the importance of finding and keeping a good job, it is surprising that the methods on how to do this aren’t taught at our universities or through public courses. I therefore compiled everything necessary to succeed in corporate careers,” Malou relates.

The book is a mix of practical career advise, anecdotal examples of job challenges and success, thought-provoking exercises and easy-to-use templates.

A 140-page light read, The Career Roadmap is divided into four parts. The first part focuses on figuring out what you’d like to do, finding out your purpose, and setting a goal. The second part is about the practical side of going after that dream job. The third part is about managing your corporate life and how to manage whatever aspects of that corporate career you have. The last part is about exiting. It’s about resignations or getting redundated. “I’ve helped a lot of clients find even better jobs after they are affected by involuntary separation,” Malou discloses.

Everything that Malou learned from spending 14 years in the corporate world, her stint as a head hunter and her current nine-year career as a consultant and coach, she generously shares. But her book can only accommodate so much information. Those who seriously want to thresh out career issues can set a one-on-one session career coaching appointment with her. “We do certain exercises, sometimes. Some of the exercises are table top exercises that are used around the world by a lot of career coaches. Sometimes, we even invest in an online personality tool, just the ones that have the highest validity and reliability. It depends on how much the client wants to delve into this issue, how much he is willing to invest and how quickly he wants to find these things out,” she describes. For those who are very ready, it just usually takes four sessions to figure things out. These can stretch to six for others.

The Career Roadmap: Your Personal Guide to Corporate Career Success is priced at P350 and is available at National Bookstore: Ayala Fairview Terraces, SM Fairview, SM North Edsa, Trinoma, Cubao Superbranch, Quezon Avenue, Greenhills, Robinsons Galleria, SM Megamall , Shangri-la Plaza Mall, SM Aura, Market!
