Donny Pangilinan Champions Taking a ‘Leap of Faith’ and Starting Small with Sun Life

Following the massive promo run for his recent film “Tayo Sa Wakas“, actor and Sun Life Philippines brand ambassador Donny Pangilinan is stepping back into his role as the country’s favorite “Bright Boy.” At a recent media gathering for Sun Life’s Start Small, Live Bright Now campaign hosted by Nikki Viola, the young star opened up about navigating life goals, overcoming the anxiety of overthinking, and why perfection should never be a prerequisite to starting your financial journey.

Now spending some well-deserved family time, focusing on wellness, and catching up on sleep, Pangilinan shared how much he missed his Sun Life family. He used his platform to speak directly to young Filipinos trying to make sense of their future in a challenging economic climate.

The Power of the First Step: Donny’s Life Guide

During an interactive segment, Pangilinan was challenged to break down the immediate “first steps” required to conquer major milestones. His answers painted a picture of a practical, collaborative mindset that applies to sports, business, and personal finance alike:

    • Launching a Passion Project or Business: For Pangilinan, who is currently managing one of his own “baby projects,” independent success is a myth. ”The first step I did was call one of my mentors to ask for his advice and then call or contact a team you trust… You can do what business you want, but if it’s not with the right team, it’s never going to turn out right.“
      • Achieving Massive Future Milestones (Like Buying a Home): Donny relies heavily on visualization and intentional writing. ”Write it down and put it in places in your life that you’ll see it, like your wallpaper… You’ll be surprised that the power of writing it down is really, really big because your body wants to function in achieving that goal.“
        • Tackling Fitness and Broad Ambitions (Like a Marathon): He advises against diving headfirst into overwhelming situations, recommending starting with short distances (like 1k or 2k) alongside run clubs. “Step by step, start with short distances and do it with a fun group.“

Green Lights, Red Lights, and Overcoming Perfectionism

Reflecting on lessons from his own mentors, Pangilinan shared a powerful driving analogy regarding how people approach life and long-term planning.

”When you get into a car and you go to a specific destination, you don’t go there thinking that all stop lights will be green,” Donny observed. “You choose to go to this destination knowing that there will be obstacles along the way or there will be stop signs. But that doesn’t mean you won’t end up at the destination you’re supposed to be.”

He pointed out that in an era dominated by social media comparison and hyper-perfectionism, overthinking often paralyzes people before they even begin.

”In this day and age, wanting to be perfect is such a big thing—or overthinking about achievements of others before your own… All of those things contribute to why you’re not able to start in the first place. But if you just put that aside and just say, ‘Hey, I’m going to take a leap of faith and let’s see what happens,’ you’ll be surprised by what the outcome can be.”

Debunking Insurance Myths: “It’s Rated to Your Needs”

Addressing the ongoing financial crisis and inflation pressures in the Philippines, Pangilinan acknowledged that young adults rightfully want to make sure their hard-earned money is going to the right place. He noted that one of the biggest misconceptions holding people back is the belief that life insurance and financial planning are exclusively expensive.

”One of the biggest misconceptions I think is when it comes to insurance, that it costs a lot of money,” Pangilinan noted. “But saving a small amount of money allocated for that gives you more certainty… to give you more safety about what’s going to happen in the future, it really makes it worth it.”

Recalling his own early days with the company, he revealed that his very first move before shooting a commercial years ago was sitting down with a Sun Life advisor to map out his 20-to-30-year goals. He strongly encourages his fans and Orange Magazine PH readers to do the same.

”Put yourself out there just so that you get to experience things for the first time and things that will hopefully teach you about maturity, growth, and leaving your comfort zone… Start small, guys, and live bright now.”
